Shaun Cooney was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. After receiving his BA from Bowdoin College in Government and History, he went on to earn a Master of Arts degree in medieval European History from Arizona State University, completing his postgraduate coursework at Cambridge. He has worked as an actor, an illustrator, a muralist, and a teacher.
